Psychology

If you’ve ever wondered why people do the things you do, you’ve wondered about the things we study in psychology. Technically defined as “the scientific study of behavior and mental processes,” psychology is such a diverse and dynamic field that you can apply it to any job, role, or experience that you have.

In addition to helping you better understand your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, it helps you better relate to and understand others at work, with family and friends, and in your love life.

Many people think that people with advanced degrees in psychology are always therapists, when in fact psychology is so diverse that the American Psychological Association has 56 different Divisions—divisions that focus on things like computer applications, human factors, education, exercise behavior, law, and women’s studies—to meet the multitude of interests among its members. There’s a reason Introduction to Psychology is required by almost every major and many technical areas of study!

The CSCC Psychology department has over 50 full- and part-time instructors who have a wealth of knowledge and a wide range of experience in the field. Many students don’t realize that four-year institutions often focus on research, with teaching as a secondary task. The advantage of studying psychology at a community college like Columbus State is that your teachers are passionate about teaching, and they enjoy coming to class each day and interacting personally with students.
