The Online Writing Center
The Online Writing Center at Columbus State Community College is a free service to all students who need help at any stage of the writing process. We offer writing tutoring in two ways. One way is asynchronous tutoring where students can submit essays to the OWC at any time via the Blackboard Assignment Feature, and these essays will be read by a writing consultant who is also a faculty member here at Columbus State.
Based on needs outlined on the submission form, our consultants provide feedback about the essays within 48 hours of the submission. We use a variety of methods to provide feedback, including using the Track Changes and Insert Comments tools in Microsoft Word. We also provide summary comments to the student and session comments to the student's instructor. To use this type of tutoring, you can click on "Submit Writing" on our Blackboard site.
Another way we provide tutoring is through synchronous tutoring, or an online, real-time web conference, where student and tutor are both at different computers but can talk to each other over the phone or over an internet connection and they can both be looking at the paper together at the same time. This requires a set appointment and internet access, and is enhanced if you have a web cam or at least a microphone and speakers to use. You can make an appointment on our Blackboard site under the button "Web Conference."
We also offer great links to writing resources such as the Purdue OWL, and we have a 'Writing Tips' section as well as a discussion board where a student can post a question if they do not want to submit an entire paper. Our Quick Questions are answered within twelve hours.
For access to the OWC, students should log into Blackboard and check under "My Organizations" and click on the appropriate OWC link listed there.
